Vibrational Sound Therapy

Vibrational Sound Therapy (VST) combines soothing vibrations and tones to induce an immediate relaxed state. VST is a private session where therapeutic singing bowls are placed on the body; the soothing combination of tones and vibrations produces a state of tranquility that calms the nervous system. As you listen to gentle ambient tones and feel the sound waves flow directly into your body, you will release stress and tension and reach a meditative state. Relaxation during a VST session brings on the same kind of brain states as yoga, tai chi, and meditation.

In this state, our bodies produce nitric oxide, which opens blood vessels, increases the efficiency of our cells, and regulates blood pressure: All things that will aid your healing response.

Need Some More Information?

Here are some frequently asked questions to help you.

  • Once in the treatment room, we'll chat a bit, and you can share if you have any specific intentions for your session. Then you will lie down, fully clothed, on the massage table, covered by a sheet. Most clients relax with their eyes closed, while others focus on a mantra, word, or intention. Therapeutic singing bowls will be gently placed on your body and struck softly with a felt-tipped mallet. You will be enveloped by the beautiful tones of each bowl and immersed in soothing vibrations. You may become so relaxed that you fall asleep. At the very least, you will feel stress and tension melt away, and you will feel deeply relaxed.

  • Yes, to make sure you’re comfortable, many accommodations can be made for your specific needs and concerns. For example, suppose you have a metal knee replacement. In that case, we will adjust the positioning of the singing bowl so that you are not experiencing any discomfort from vibrating metal on metal. If you have difficulty lying down, you can receive your session on your side. We can also do what is called “off body” when the vibration is experienced without actually resting the singing bowl on the body.

  • VST is so gentle and relaxing that almost all people will fall asleep at some point during the session. Those who undergo a state of deep relaxation often report a feeling of mental freshness that they carry with them after the session is over. Relaxation and meditative states of mind have also been shown to increase the threshold for emotional response, meaning they can help us control our emotional responses to outside influences. Like other kinds of meditation, sound therapy can help us be more internally aware while being more present in the moment and more connected with our surroundings.

  • Most clients will start to relax as soon as the session begins. Their muscles will lose tension, and they may even start to slip into the alpha brain wave pattern within the first minutes. The alpha wave pattern is associated with daydreaming and pre-sleep. As the heart rate slows, blood pressure falls and arteries expand giving rise to a feeling of warmth. This relaxed state allows the body to repair itself instead of responding to outside concerns. The immune system is at its best when we are relaxed.

  • Studies have shown that sound can have a measurable impact on brain waves, heart rate, and other physiological processes. VST can be an effective adjunct to other forms of treatment and is used in many settings:

    Holistic and integrative wellness centers

    Hospitals and medical facilities

    Mental health clinics

    Yoga and meditation studios

    Spiritual retreat centers

    Corporate wellness programs

The History of Sound Healing

The use of sound healing to promote well-being has been around since the beginning of recorded history. The earliest evidence of ‘sound healing therapy’ in a formal sense is probably from the indigenous Australians of 40,000 years ago, who used ancient didgeridoos in healing rituals.

The ancient Egyptians also utilized sound healing, with pyramids designed to create sound chambers.

But sound and music therapy is far more wide-ranging than this. From Tibetan singing bowls, shamanic drums, vocal chanting, and more, there’s a form of sound healing to be found in every culture throughout history.
